Pass it on!

Today is the launch of The Summer Reading Challenge, an initiative which encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six books during the long summer holiday through their local library. This year thousands of children will be inspired to share their love of reading by recommending or passing on a book to friends, family and carers, in turn making one of the books they read this summer one that has been recommended to them.

Reading for pleasure has been shown to be pivotal to life chances. Research by UKLA shows the Summer Reading Challenge increases children’s enjoyment of reading. A host of hugely popular children’s authors are lending their support to by recommending their favourite children’s books in a drive to get children sharing and celebrating reading.

Michael Morpurgo’s recommended read is Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, saying:

“Perhaps the oldest poem in our language, or what was our language, which is as enthralling today as it ever was. The best of all the Arthurian tales.”

Join the #PassABook campaign and suggest which books you’d like to pass on to the next generation.
