Today marks the centenary of the sinking of the Lusitania

Today’s centenary of the sinking of the Lusitania was marked by a minute’s silence during a memorial service in Liverpool. This once famous ship and one of the largest in the world at the time, was torpedoed by a German submarine on 7 May 1915 during WWI, killing about 1200 people traveling from New York.

Michael Morpurgo’s moving novel, Listen to the Moon, set in May 1915, pays tribute to this monumental historical event. Alfie and his fisherman father find a girl on an uninhabited island in the Scillies – injured, thirsty, lost…and with absolutely no memory of who she is, or how she came to be there.
